Washington, D.C. – Representatives Michael McCaul, Republican Leader of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, and Eliot Engel, the Committee’s Chairman, today released the following statement remembering the al-Qaeda-led bombings of the U.S. Embassies in Kenya and Tanzania on August 7, 1998 that claimed the lives of more than 200 people and wounded over 1,000.
 
“Today, we honor the dedicated men and women who died in the horrific attacks on our embassies and extend our deepest condolences to the surviving friends and family members.
 
“Last year, we observed the historic peaceful protests that ousted the brutal Sudanese dictator, Omar al-Bashir, and his regime’s long time facilitation of international terror. As the civilian-led transitional government works to reform and hold those responsible for such crimes accountable, we support U.S. efforts to engage with the Government of Sudan and come to a fair resolution of terrorist claims against Sudan to secure long-overdue compensation for the victims of these heinous attacks.”
