On Iran Deal Anniversary, Chairman Royce Applauds Passage of Measures to Hold Regime Accountable
Washington, D.C. – House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce (R-CA) released the following statement after the House passed his U.S. Financial System Protection Act (H.R. 4992) and Leader McCarthy’s Iran Accountability Act of 2016 (H.R. 5631):
“When he announced his nuclear deal one year ago, President Obama promised to keep pressuring Iran on terrorism, human rights and ballistic missiles. Sadly, his actions have not matched his words. By now, we’ve all seen the pattern – when Iran lashes out, the administration backs down.
“As a result, the Iranian regime has only grown more emboldened. Today, Iran is considered the leading state sponsor of terrorism. It’s repressing the Iranian people at home, while propping up the murderous Assad regime abroad. And under the president’s nuclear deal, Iran has actually accelerated its illicit ballistic missiles program. We cannot stand by and watch as Iran develops the vehicle to launch a nuclear warhead at the United States.
“These two bills are about holding Iran accountable. The regime has no business gaining access to the U.S. dollar. It cannot get a free pass to continue slaughtering innocent people, and grow its stockpile of illegal missiles.”
