Foreign Affairs Committee to Markup Bill to Block Ransoms to Iran
Washington, D.C. – House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce (R-CA) announced the Committee will meet Wednesday, September 14 at 10 a.m. to consider the Prohibiting Future Ransom Payments to Iran Act (H.R. 5931). The legislation, authored by Chairman Royce, ensures there are no future cash payouts to Iran – the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism.
The introduction of H.R. 5931 came the same week it was reported that the Obama administration decided to pay all of a $1.7 billion settlement with Iran in cash. The Chairman’s legislation makes clear that the Obama administration violated longstanding U.S. policy by releasing prisoners and paying ransom for the return of Americans held hostage by Iran. Additionally, the bill demands transparency on future settlements—to ensure they are not used to pay ransom.
