Chairman Royce, Rep. Connolly Introduce Resolution Calling on Iran to Free Detained Americans
Washington: D.C. – Today, House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce (R-CA) and Rep. Gerry Connolly (D-VA) introduced H. Res. 808, a bipartisan resolution calling on Iran to unconditionally release Iranian-Americans Siamak Namazi and his father Baquer Namazi. Siamak has been detained since October 2015 and his father has been detained since February. Both are being held without charges in Evin Prison – a brutal and notorious prison in Iran.
On the introduction of H. Res. 808, Chairman Royce said: “As the leading state sponsor of terrorism, Tehran has a long and brutal record of abusing human rights – and targeting Americans. Siamak and Baquer Namazi deserve to be free and with their families, end of story. I am pleased to join Rep. Connolly in introducing this resolution, which should push President Obama to step up efforts to bring them home immediately.”
On the introduction of H. Res. 808, Rep. Connolly said: “With the introduction of this resolution, Chairman Royce and I join the U.S. State Department in calling on Iran to release immediately Siamak and Baquer Namazi. Iran needs to abide by the Rule of Law. These unjustly detained American citizens have been denied due process, and this resolution urges the Administration to secure their release and return them to their families.”
