Washington, D.C. — Today, House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul (R-Texas) released a statement on the anniversary of the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, during which Iran-backed Hamas terrorists brutally murdered 1,200 people, committed widespread sexual violence, and took 250 hostages, including American citizens.

“Today, with a heavy heart, I remember and honor the innocent victims of Hamas’ evil rampage on October 7, 2023, including all those who were savagely assaulted, taken captive, or murdered. Hamas is still holding almost 100 hostages, every single one of whom must be released immediately and unconditionally.

“We cannot lose the moral clarity we had one year ago. Hamas knew their massacre would sow chaos in the Middle East and lead to significant death and suffering in Gaza. Yet they chose to start this war and continue to exacerbate its humanitarian toll, including through their unconscionable use of human shields. Meanwhile, Israel is fighting a multi-front war of necessity to restore its security in the face of persistent attacks from Iran and its terrorist proxies. The U.S. must continue to stand strongly with our ally through political, diplomatic, and military support, including supplying the weapons it needs for a decisive victory on all fronts.”
