Chairman McCaul on Death of Wrongfully Detained American in Syria

Washington, D.C. — Today, House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul issued the following statement on the death of Majd Kamalmaz, an American humanitarian and psychologist, following his wrongful detention by the Assad regime in Syria.

“This week we found out Majd Kamalmaz, a Texan wrongfully detained in Syria in 2017, died while held hostage by the Assad regime. During his captivity, Majd’s family fought tirelessly for his release – tragically, the Assad regime has robbed the Kamalmaz family of their future together.

“Majd was a humanitarian and trauma psychologist. In the words of Majd’s daughter, Maryam, ‘He had a heart to help people.’ He was never charged with a crime and suffered abhorrent brutality. Congress will never stop working to hold his captors accountable.”
