McCaul on Reports China’s Top Nuclear Weapons Lab Used Restricted American Tech
Washington, DC– House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul released a statement on reports China’s top nuclear weapons lab has used restricted U.S. computer chips. There have been American export restrictions for decades meant to prevent American technology from falling into the hands of foreign adversaries such as China. The Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) which is responsible for implementing these export controls in the United States, has been a major focus of the committee’s oversight.
“Days ago, we learned a top Air Force general is planning for war with China in two years. Today, we learn U.S. tech is supporting China’s nuclear weapons lab. Our government doesn’t have time to complain that these problems are tough. We need solutions. That’s why I’ll be conducting a thorough review of the policies and procedures at BIS to ensure export controls are being properly enforced. Time is of the essence.”
