McCaul Sees New U.S. Sanctions Against Corrupt Individuals in Moldova as Important Step
Houston, TX– House Foreign Affairs Committee Lead Republican Michael McCaul released the following statement on today’s U.S. sanctions against individuals and entities in Moldova engaged in corruption and Kremlin malign influence operations. In July, Rep. McCaul led a letter urging the Biden administration to make a determination on whether Vladimir Plahotniuc and Ilan Shor should be sanctioned for their involvement in significant acts of corruption in Moldova.
“I’m glad to see the Biden administration finally take action against these destabilizing figures in Moldova, as I urged back in July. Under the leadership of President Maia Sandu and Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilita, Moldova has actively pursued a pro-democracy and anticorruption agenda. The U.S. must continue to support the Moldovan government in fully realizing this mandate by continuing to sanction corrupt actors in Moldova and ensuring the country doesn’t fall victim to Putin’s aggression and malign influence.”
