Austin, TX – House Foreign Affairs Lead Republican Michael McCaul issued the following statement in response to the growing fighting and violence in Ethiopia.

“I am deeply alarmed by the escalation in fighting in Northern Ethiopia and condemn in the strongest terms the willful targeting of civilians, including reports of airstrikes on schools and hospitals, extrajudicial killings, arbitrary detention, mass rape, recruitment of child soldiers and other atrocities. I urge the parties to immediately cease hostilities and move to the African Union-led peace process, which they have publicly pledged to participate in.

“Once again, I call on President Biden to utilize existing authorities to sanction individuals responsible for these atrocities, and any atrocities committed over the course of the war. The renewed and intensified fighting underscores that the administration’s ‘wait and see’ approach has failed. History is watching and bold action is needed now.”
