Washington, D.C. – Congressman Michael McCaul, Republican Leader on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, today released the following statement on recent developments in Sudan, including Secretary Pompeo’s historic trip to Khartoum:

“I commend Prime Minister Hamdok and the civilian-led transitional government of Sudan for taking important steps to address the outstanding claims of victims of terrorism, recognizing the importance of women’s rights and participation, repealing laws that violate religious freedoms, and pursuing accountability for violations of human rights. I support the efforts led by Secretary Pompeo to expand diplomatic engagement with Sudan at this pivotal moment on key regional priorities, including encouraging the establishment of diplomatic relations with Israel. I encourage the administration to continue high-level engagement with the transitional government to support the Sudanese people and their quest for a more stable, democratic and prosperous Sudan. I also support ongoing Congressional efforts to advance legal peace legislation and secure long-overdue compensation for victims of the USS Cole and East Africa Embassy bombings.”
