Washington, D.C. – July 1st marks the 23rd anniversary of the handover of Hong Kong to the Chinese Communist Party. The anniversary comes the day after the CCP enacted a sweeping new law cracking down on the rights promised to Hong Kong under the Sino-British Joint Declaration. Congressman Michael McCaul, Republican Leader on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, released the following statement:

“This year’s July 1st anniversary of Hong Kong’s handover to the Chinese Communist Party is an especially dark day for freedom loving people around the world. The CCP’s dystopian ‘national security’ law, enacted earlier this week by their sham legislature, is a brazen violation of international law and ends the ‘one country, two systems’ principle and Hong Kong’s autonomy. The United States will continue to be unwavering in our support of Hong Kongers seeking freedom from the CCP’s tyrannical oppression.”
