McCaul Calls on Democrat Leadership to Bring Urgent Counter CCP Legislation to the Floor
Washington, D.C. – Congressman Michael McCaul, Republican Leader on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, released the following statement applauding the Senate for passing multiple bipartisan bills that will hold the Chinese Communist Party accountable for their harmful behavior and calling on House Democrat Leadership to bring them to the floor this week.
“Over the last few weeks, the Senate has passed multiple pieces of bipartisan legislation to address the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) harmful behavior in the United States and around the world. From imposing consequences for encroaching on Hong Kong’s autonomy to ensuring CCP-linked companies play by the rules on U.S. exchanges and addressing CCP propaganda at U.S. universities, these important bills will help push back against the growing threat of the CCP. Our Senate colleagues passed these bills with overwhelming bipartisan support, and I believe the House would do the same if Speaker Pelosi would add them to the floor schedule this week.”
- S.3798 imposes sanctions with respect to foreign persons involved in the erosion of certain obligations of China with respect to Hong Kong.
- S. 939 addresses China’s influence on postsecondary educational institutions through Confucius Institutes, which are cultural institutes directly or indirectly funded by the Chinese government.
- S. 945 requires certain issuers of securities to establish that they are not owned or controlled by a foreign government. Specifically, an issuer must make this certification if the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board is unable to audit specified reports because the issuer has retained a foreign public accounting firm not subject to inspection by the board.
