Washington, D.C.- Congressman Michael McCaul, Republican Leader on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, released the following statement on the administration’s announcement of sanctions  pursuant to the Caesar Syria Civilian Protection Act, which Congress passed in December 2019. The administration also announced new sanctions pursuant to its October 2019 Executive Order on Syria.

“The new Syria sanctions announced today will cut off resources Bashar Al Assad, his family and associates use to brutalize the Syrian people and to profit from destroying their country. These sanctions are an important tool to compel the regime to end its attacks on civilians as well as to dissuade others from financially investing in Assad’s atrocities. The administration must keep up its enforcement of the Caesar Act to hold the Assad regime accountable and to secure justice for the Syrian people.”
