Washington, D.C. – House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce (R-CA) issued the following statement after the House passed the Global Food Security Reauthorization Act (S. 2269):

“In recent years, disaster and conflict has forced nearly 70 million people globally from their homes – the highest level of displacement in recorded history. Millions are facing famine, and many more are chronically hungry. This crisis threatens the humanitarian, economic and security interests of the United States and our allies.

“Today Congress is taking a big, bipartisan step forward to provide relief. Reauthorizing and strengthening the Global Food Security Act will save lives and break down barriers to agriculture-led economic growth in the developing world. It will allow us to stretch our dollars further, and deliver the right response, at the right place, at the right time. It will provide poor farmers overseas, particularly women, new opportunities. And it will help keep America safe and strong.”
