Hearings Scheduled for Thursday, July 9 and Tuesday, July 14

Washington, D.C. – As the Obama Administration works to complete a final nuclear deal with Iran, U.S. Rep. Ed Royce (R-CA), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, today announced the second in a series of hearings to examine an anticipated nuclear deal with Iran.  The hearing, at which former Senator Joe Lieberman and General Michael Hayden will testify, will begin at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, July 14.  This hearing will follow a previously announced hearing scheduled for this Thursday at 10 a.m.

In announcing the series of hearings, Chairman Royce said:  “As we anticipate a congressional review of the Administration's possible nuclear agreement with Iran, we’ll be looking to see how the Administration has done on Congress’ red lines.  Did we get anywhere, anytime inspections?  Full Iranian transparency regarding its past nuclear activities? No large-scale, immediate sanctions relief; but guaranteed, workable sanctions snap-backs? Meaningful restraints on Iran’s nuclear program that last decades?  This hearing will be the first in a series the Committee will hold should the Administration strike what might be one of the most significant agreements in decades.  As I have said, no deal is far better than a bad deal.”

Also today, Chairman Royce said he expects that Secretary of State John Kerry would testify before the Committee following the completion of a nuclear deal with Iran.  The timing of a hearing with Secretary Kerry would be dependent upon if and when a final agreement is reached.  If the Obama Administration submits an agreement to Congress before Friday, a 30-day Congressional review period begins.  If the Administration submits an agreement on or after Friday, the Congressional review period is extended to 60 days.
