Bin laden is dead and so are some other senior al-Qaeda terrorists but the threat from broader al-Qaeda, including some of their affiliates is greater today than it was even a year or two ago. State’s Counterterrorism Bureau has a big role to play in countering the threat from al-Qaeda and its affiliates. We look forward to this oversight hearing so we can find out exactly what the Bureau is doing, whether or not it is having an impact countering al-Qaeda, and what it can do to improve its efforts.”

Chairman Ros-Lehtinen on the hearing: “Afghanistan has become the largest ever stabilization, relief and reconstruction effortundertaken by the U.S. government, with allocations now exceeding over $103billion in U.S. taxpayer money, surpassing similar efforts in Iraq which saw the total U.S. investment surpass $66 billion. The final assessment by the Special Inspector General for Iraq Reconstruction painted a grim picture of the United States’ inability to conduct such endeavors on this large a scale and the end result was a waste of nearly $8 billion in taxpayer dollars lost towaste, fraud, abuse and a lack of accountability. It is important that Congress continue to conduct proper oversight over these funds, and this hearing is a chance to see if the U.S. government has learned its lessons from Iraq and if it has implemented the reforms needed to properly plan, execute and overseethis type of operation in the most efficient and effective manner.”

All of this has serious implications for not only the region, but also the United States’ bilateral relations with our regional partners. There are obstacles to be sure, but this hearing will examine ways to help the Nigerian government combat Boko Haram and protect its own citizens. Those girls need to come home.”
