Appearing on CNN’s “The Lead with Jake Tapper” this afternoon in advance of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s speech to the United Nations, Rep. Ed Royce (R-CA), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, urged increased sanctions on the regime in Tehran.

Royce called on the Senate to take up and pass the Nuclear Iran Prevention Act (H.R. 850), which would increase pressure on the Iranian regime amid its continued attempt to acquire a nuclear weapons capability.   The bill, which passed overwhelmingly in the House of Representatives in July, broadens economic sanctions, strengthens human rights sanctions, and increases oversight of the implementation and enforcement of existing sanctions.

Chairman Royce credits the pressure of existing sanctions for Iran’s recent change in rhetoric.
