A bill to authorize a comprehensive strategic approach for United States foreign assistance to developing countries to reduce global poverty and hunger, achieve food and nutrition security, promote inclusive, sustainable, agricultural-led economic growth, improve nutritional outcomes, especially for women and children, build resilience among vulnerable populations, and for other purposes.

Despite the fact that women and girls serve as the backbone of agricultural economies throughout the developing world, they are disproportionately affected by famine and food insecurity. H.R. 1567, the Global Food Security Act, introduced by Rep. Chris Smith (R-NJ), seeks to correct this disparity by putting in place policies to expand women’s access to property rights, connect small-scale farmers to markets, stimulate agriculture-led economic growth, and mitigate the need for U.S. food aid. The House passed the Senate version of the bill on July 6, 2016; signed into law on July 20, 2016 (P.L. 114-195).
