Washington, D.C. – Congressman Michael McCaul (R-TX), Lead Republican of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, issued the following statement about Democrats denying fairness in their impeachment probe:

“Adam Schiff and Speaker Pelosi are intentionally skirting prior impeachment precedent in order to deny Republicans basic rights in their partisan investigation. In the Nixon and Clinton cases, votes were taken on the House Floor to establish a formal inquiry which set up the rules of the road. Today, Democrats have denied House members the opportunity to take that vote. Their rush to impeachment has ensured there will be no fairness in this process and is reckless when the presidential election is 13 months away.

“I remain very concerned that Adam Schiff and Speaker Pelosi are not allowing the House Foreign Affairs Committee to perform our lawful oversight duties. Republicans on our Committee will not cast aside our rights or congressional obligations.

“I hope the State Department will continue working with our Committee to elevate the facts, but Democrats must first establish a legitimate investigation that follows past precedent and House Rules. We also expect Democrats will treat witnesses with fairness and respect, which I have called for since day one.”
