Washington D.C. – Congressman Michael McCaul (R-TX), Lead Republican of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, released the following statement on the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) ruling that its chief prosecutor can open an investigation into alleged activities by U.S. personnel in Afghanistan.

“I am extremely alarmed by the International Criminal Court’s (ICC) decision to pursue an inquiry into the activities of U.S. and Afghan personnel in Afghanistan. As Secretary Pompeo stated, the United States is not a party to the ICC and the Afghan government asked the ICC to call off this misguided probe. This is a completely unnecessary distraction from U.S. efforts to help bring peace to Afghanistan.

“This body should not expend resources on political attacks against the United States or our partner Israel. Along with our Afghan counterparts, we remain committed to helping secure a safe and independent Afghanistan and will not let this misguided decision disrupt our united efforts.”
