Washington, D.C. – House Foreign Affairs Committee Lead Republican Michael McCaul released the following statement in response to reports of a recently discovered secretive chip startup that may be helping Chinese Communist Party-controlled Huawei evade U.S. sanctions. The Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) seemingly knows of this facility but has yet to take significant action.

“This issue gets at the heart of whether export controls are a strategic asset, as the current national security advisor has said, that keeps the United States steps ahead of evasion by our adversaries or a tool that is content with being behind the curve. The fact that BIS knows about this secretive facility but doesn’t appear to be meaningfully acting means the mindset and culture in that building must change.”
