McCaul Rejects China’s Lies about Taiwan at the UN
Washington, D.C. – Fifty years ago today, the United Nations General Assembly passed Resolution 2758, allowing the communist government of the People’s Republic of China to become a UN member and permanent member of the UN Security Council. In the ensuing decades, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has distorted Resolution 2758 to promote the lies that this document recognizes China’s sovereignty over Taiwan and permanently excludes Taiwan from UN participation. House Foreign Affairs Committee Lead Republican Michael McCaul has released the following statement on the anniversary of Resolution 2758.
“For 50 years, the CCP has distorted Resolution 2758 to discriminate against Taiwan at the UN as part of its larger plan to dismantle Taiwan’s democracy and annex the island. Resolution 2758 does not say Taiwan is a part of China. It does not say China may represent Taiwan before the UN. It does not address Taiwan’s sovereignty – it doesn’t even include the word Taiwan. On the 50th anniversary, I urge other democratic governments to collectively reject the CCP’s false claims about this document and to root out these lies that the CCP has embedded throughout the UN bureaucracy.”
