Washington, D.C. – House Foreign Affairs Committee Lead Republican Michael McCaul has released the following statement reacting to two days of testimony from Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Milley, and Commander of Central Command General Kenneth McKenzie before the Senate and House Armed Services Committees.

“These initial hearings have made one thing very clear – President Biden lied to the American people about the advice he got on his decision to withdraw all U.S. troops from Afghanistan. It’s also crystal clear that if President Biden had listened to his top generals or the intelligence community’s warnings, we likely would not be in the situation we are in now. While some of the many outstanding questions were answered, there are still many things we don’t know. It is vital we continue to investigate how things went so wrong in Afghanistan, resulting in the death of 13 U.S. servicemembers and the abandonment of American citizens, green card holders and our Afghan partners behind enemy lines.”
