Washington, D.C. – House Foreign Affairs Committee Lead Republican Michael McCaul released the following statement in response to the Biden administration’s intended plans to redeploy troops to Somalia.

“I am deeply concerned by the growing threat to U.S. national security posed by al Shabaab. I continue to be very disappointed by the Biden administration’s lack of engagement with the foreign affairs committees, despite repeated requests for an interagency briefing to understand U.S. policy and strategy in Somalia.

“I look forward to understanding how the redeployment of troops bolsters U.S. counterterrorism and intelligence gathering capabilities, as well as how it more effectively advances the capabilities of Somali forces to combat al Shabaab themselves. The U.S. has invested billions of dollars in Somalia, and Congress must continue to conduct rigorous oversight to ensure our security assistance and other aid programs are demonstrating results.”
