Washington, D.C. – House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul released the following statement following Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s decision to pause the docking of Iranian warships in Brazil ahead of his meeting today with President Joe Biden.

“It is completely unacceptable for President Lula da Silva to simply postpone, instead of forbidding, the visit of two Iranian warships to Brazil to appease the White House ahead of Lula’s meeting with Biden today. One of these ships, the Makran, was suspected of being involved in a weapons sale to Venezuela that ultimately fell flat. Iran has long sought to make further advances in the region, and President Biden must urge President Lula da Silva to wholly reject any future docking of these two ships.”
