Immediately following, Committee will consider bill to expand scholarships for girls in Pakistan

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Ed Royce (R-CA), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, will convene a hearing TOMORROW at 10:00 a.m. to examine how the education of women in countries prone to violent extremism can create economic opportunities and help counter the spread of radicalism.  The hearing is entitled, “Women’s Education: Promoting Development, Countering Radicalism.”

Immediately following the hearing, the Committee will consider Malala Yousafzai Scholarship Act (H.R. 3583).  The legislation, authored by Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), expands the number of scholarships available to Pakistani women under the Merit and Needs-Based Scholarship Program.  Live markup webcast and any adopted amendments will be available HERE.

Chairman Royce on the hearing:  “In too many places around the globe women are denied the ability to pursue an education and economic opportunity.  Study after study shows that educating women and girls produces tremendous benefits to society at large.  More women in the important roles as policy shapers, educators, community members and activists strengthen the stand against ideologies of violent extremism.  This hearing will examine the ways in which improved educational opportunities for women can better local economies and help counter the spread of radicalism.”
