State and Treasury Officials to Testify

*Note RSVP requirement for covering hearing*

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Rep. Ed Royce (R-CA), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, announced that on Thursday, May 8, the Committee will convene a hearing to examine Russian influence in the ongoing crisis in Ukraine.  The hearing, entitled “Russia’s Destabilization of Ukraine,” will begin at 10:00 a.m.

The hearing follows the Chairman’s recent bipartisan delegation to Ukraine, including Ranking Member Eliot Engel (D-NY), to assess on the ground the growing crisis there.  The delegation traveled to eastern Ukraine and met with Prime Minister Yatsenyuk and acting President Turchynov, leading presidential candidates, non-governmental organizations, and representatives of ethnic and religious minority communities.

Chairman Royce on the hearing:  “Since the Committee delegation’s return from Ukraine last week, the situation in the country has deteriorated significantly, with a great deal of uncertainty.  But there is one thing we do know:  Vladimir Putin is the driving force behind the destabilization of Ukraine.  It is essential that the American people understand the impact of Russia’s aggression on U.S. interests.  This hearing will provide Committee Members with the opportunity to question key State Department and Treasury Department officials about Russia’s actions and the Administration’s strategy to counter them.”
