Washington, D.C. — Today, House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul issued the following statement ahead of the one-year mark since Putin’s wrongful detainment of Evan Gershkovich, an American reporter working in Russia. On Tuesday, a Russian court extended Evan’s detainment based on politically motivated espionage charges.

“Friday marks one year since Evan Gershkovich was wrongfully and arbitrarily detained by the Putin regime. Evan’s tragic case shows that American adversaries prey upon the innocent to execute their authoritarian foreign policy objectives. My thoughts remain with Evan and his family. The Biden administration must do all it can to secure his immediate release.”
