Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Rep. Ed Royce (R-CA), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, issued this statement following the Pentagon confirmation of the killing of al-Shabaab leader Ahmed Godane:

“Ahmed Godane’s death should deal a serious blow to the al-Qaeda-affiliated al-Shabaab network, which has been a growing threat to U.S. national security.  The world remembers watching innocents flee from Shabaab terrorists during an attack on a shopping mall in Nairobi, Kenya.  Thankfully, an African force on the ground in Somalia has been making steady gains against these killers.  But we must keep a close watch on al-Shabaab, offering support to the African allies fighting these terrorists, as the group looks to adapt to this loss."
