Washington D.C. – Congressman Michael McCaul (R-TX), Lead Republican of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, released the following statement on reports that U.S. intelligence confirmed that the Chinese Communist Party concealed the extent of the coronavirus outbreak and under-reported the number of coronavirus cases and deaths in China.

“Even before news of this report was released it was clear that the Chinese Communist Party is not a trustworthy partner in the fight against COVID-19. They lied to the world about the human to human transmission of the virus, silenced doctors and journalists who tried to report the truth, and are now apparently hiding the accurate number of people impacted by this disease. Although the CCP has a long history of lying to their own people and the global community, I still find it shocking the lengths their regime will go to in order to protect their  power. That is why I asked the State Department last week to open a multilateral investigation into the CCP’s initial cover up and subsequent actions regarding this pandemic.  I also asked major technology CEOs to deplatform CCP officials who continue to use their sites to spread dangerous misinformation. We must stop the CCP from causing further damage amid this pandemic that they allowed to fester and then spill out into the world.”

Dr. Deborah Birx, a member of the White House Coronavirus Task Force, discussed the impact inaccurate data out of China at the 3/31 briefing, saying: “So, I think the medical community interpreted the Chinese data as this was serious, but smaller than anyone expected because I think probably we were missing a significant amount of the data.”
