Washington D.C.– Today, Congressman Michael McCaul (R-TX), Lead Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, made the following statement after the House passed four pieces of legislation that support the fight for democracy in Hong Kong and push back on China’s aggression, including his resolution to condemn the Chinese Communist Party’s unacceptable behavior on the global stage:

“Last night we made progress in the fight for freedom in Hong Kong. The House unanimously passed legislation to protect pro-democracy protestors from police brutality and condemn China’s erosion of the “one country, two systems” framework. We will not stand idly by as the Chinese Communist Party commits human rights violations. America stands with the people of Hong Kong in their pursuit of democracy.

“Additionally, the House passed my resolution with Chairman Engel that commends Canada for upholding the rule of law by assisting in the extradition of Huawei’s CFO who is accused of willfully violating U.S. sanctions to proliferate technology to Iran, despite China’s hostility and their unjust detention of Canadian citizens. I thank my colleagues on both sides of the aisle in coming together to stand against authoritarian China and I urge the Senate to move swiftly on these bipartisan measures.”

The House passed Lead Republican Michael McCaul’s resolution commending the Government of Canada for upholding the rule of law and expressing concern over actions by the Government of the People’s Republic of China. The House also passed a resolution supporting the United-States Hong Kong bilateral relationship as well as the Protect Hong Kong Act and the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act of 2019.
