Washington, D.C. – The House of Representatives today passed House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce’s (R-CA) Korean Interdiction and Modernization of Sanctions Act (H.R. 1644).  The bipartisan bill strengthens sanctions targeting North Korea’s Kim Jong Un regime.

On passage, Chairman Royce said: “North Korea poses an urgent threat to the United States and our allies.  In less than four years, the regime may be capable of targeting the entire U.S. homeland with a nuclear missile.   The threat from North Korea is real, and real threats demand real responses.  This bill gives the administration a powerful tool to cut off North Korea’s funding by going after those who do business with the regime.”

The Korea Interdiction and Modernization of Sanctions Act, H.R. 1644: 

  • Expands sanctions to deter North Korea’s nuclear weapons program;
  • Targets those overseas who employ North Korean slave labor, a source of billions of dollars in annual revenue for the regime;
  • Cracks down on North Korean shipping and use of international ports; and
  • Requires the administration to determine whether North Korea is a state sponsor of terrorism.
