Washington, D.C. —U.S. Rep. Ted Poe (R-TX), Chairman of the Subcommittee on Terrorism, Nonproliferation, and Trade, appeared today on Fox Business Network’s “Morning’s With Maria” to discuss his bill (H.R. 3654) to require the Obama administration to lay out a strategy to combat terrorists’ use of social media.  The Committee passed Rep. Poe’s bill unanimously at a markup earlier this morning.

“In 2011, the president promised that he would come up with a strategy on dealing with terrorists on social media. He has come up with no strategy.

“[Terrorists] use social media sites to recruit, but also to raise money and also to spread their propaganda.”

“[T]here are 40,000 terrorist site handles on Twitter…. You don’t have, as a terrorist organization, a constitutional right to use American companies to spread hate and propaganda and to recruit.”

“The bill requires a strategy where we work with the private social media companies to bring down the terrorist sites.”
