Washington, D.C. – House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul (R-TX) and Subcommittee on the Middle East, North Africa, and Central Asia Chairman Joe Wilson (R-SC) released the following statement in response to reports that Iran is exploiting earthquake relief missions to fly weapons to Syria. These concerns were also discussed extensively in today’s House Foreign Affairs Committee Subcommittee hearing on Syria.
“Iran is directly transporting weapons into Syria under the guise of earthquake relief. The Biden administration’s overly broad sanctions exemptions enable Assad and Iran to abuse earthquake relief efforts. We urge the administration to explicitly define ‘earthquake relief’ under General License 23.”
