Washington, DC – House Foreign Affairs Committee Lead Republican Michael McCaul has issued the following statement ahead of Secretary of State Antony Blinken and National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan meeting with the Director of the Chinese Communist Party’s Foreign Affairs Commission Yang Jiechi and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and member of the CCP Central Committee Wang Yi in Alaska next week. The meeting follows hard line statements from both CCP officials. Yang Jiechi told the Biden Administration in January, “The United States should stop interference in the affairs of Hong Kong, Tibet and Xinjiang… They constitute a redline that must not be crossed.” And just last weekend, Wang Yi said “there is no room for compromise.”

“I urge Secretary Blinken and NSA Sullivan to concentrate on Chinese Communist Party actions and not promises. As these leaders meet, the CCP is carrying out genocide, destroying autonomy in Hong Kong, threatening its neighbors, emitting more pollution than any other country, and stealing hundreds of billions of dollars’ worth of American intellectual property every year — including U.S. research on the COVID vaccine. As I reminded Secretary Blinken in our hearing today, this is why we cannot treat the CCP as a normal adversary. The CCP aims to rewire the international system to its benefit, and the United States, together with our allies, must fight to promote and protect the liberal, democratic system.”
