Washington, D.C. – House Foreign Affairs Committee Lead Republican Michael McCaul has released the following statement on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s long overdue meeting with President Joe Biden. Ukraine has been a vocal opponent to the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, a Russian malign influence project the Biden Administration allowed to move forward despite bipartisan opposition in Congress.

“Our strategic partnership with Ukraine is vital to regional security, and President Zelensky’s visit to the White House is long overdue. This is especially true in light of the Biden Administration’s recent betrayal of Ukraine by allowing construction of the Nord Stream 2 pipeline to continue. I’m hopeful today’s meeting is a sign the Biden Administration will reverse course and finally stand firmly with Ukraine. And that starts with bolstering Ukraine’s defense capacity to counter further Russian aggression, including supporting its aspirations to become fully integrated into the Euro-Atlantic community. President Biden has rolled over to our adversaries too many times. It is high time for him to stand up to Putin, implement the sanctions required by law, and take concrete steps to counter the malign influence and actions he claims to be so opposed to.”
