Washington, D.C. – House Foreign Affairs Committee Lead Republican Michael McCaul has released the following statement in response to the Biden Administration’s decision to carry out a diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. Earlier this year, Congressman McCaul joined a bipartisan group in urging the administration to find a different location for the Winter Games given the Chinese Communist Party’s (CCP) human rights abuses, including genocide.

“I’m glad the Biden Administration has finally decided they will not send officials to the Beijing games, which has been the obvious choice for some time. But we must do more to protect Olympians and deny the propaganda value of this event for the CCP. I urge President Biden to encourage U.S. allies and partners to hold the IOC and CCP accountable for their disregard for human rights by joining us in a diplomatic boycott. And I urge the Biden Administration to demand the IOC protect the free speech and privacy of all participants. These Olympics are a key opportunity for the CCP to normalize their human rights atrocities – including genocide—and the free world must unite to reject them.”
