Washington, D.C. – Congressman Michael McCaul (R-TX), Lead Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, issued the following statement after 35 peaceful protesters were killed in Sudan by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) militia, an element of the Sudanese military that is implicated in carrying out the horrific genocide in Darfur.

“I strongly condemn yesterday’s massacre of peaceful protesters in Sudan by the RSF militia. This further demonstrates the Transitional Military Council has little interest in turning power over to a civilian-led government. The people of Sudan have been steadfast, peaceful, and courageous in calling for a civilian-led government and the U.S. stands with them at this critical time.

“I urge the U.S. government to coordinate with the international community to hold Sudanese military leadership and security forces accountable for these heinous attacks and continue to use all diplomatic tools to push for a civilian-led government. The world is watching and it is time for the voices of the Sudanese people to be heard and respected.”
