Washington, D.C. — House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul issued the below statement following the Biden administration’s decision to lift wide-ranging sanctions on Venezuela’s oil, gas, and gold sectors.

“I strongly oppose the Biden administration’s unilateral decision to ease wide-ranging sanctions on the Maduro regime. Giving into nothing more than a narco-terrorist regime’s empty promises for insignificant electoral reforms, the Biden administration imprudently granted sweeping sanctions relief on Venezuela’s oil, gas, and gold sectors. This will fill the regime’s coffers and allow Maduro to ensure next year’s presidential elections, which have yet to be scheduled, are neither free nor fair at the expense of the Venezuelan people fighting for democracy. With American hostages still languishing away in Venezuelan custody, President Biden continues putting a price on American lives.”
