Washington, D.C. – House Foreign Affairs Committee Lead Republican Michael McCaul has released the following statement in response to reports that China tested a nuclear-capable hypersonic missile in August. Six months ago, Congressman McCaul along with Senator Cotton warned Commerce Secretary Raimondo to immediately apply the Foreign Direct Product Rule on Phytium Technology, a company contributing to the People’s Liberation Army’s hypersonic weapons program.

“Reports that China has tested a nuclear-capable hypersonic missile is a chilling display of the Chinese Communist Party’s capabilities and intentions. To make matters worse, it is likely that U.S. software and tools contributed to the creation of this weapons system, because of our country’s permissive export controls and licensing policies with China. This should be a wakeup call for the Biden Administration to overhaul export controls and fundamentally reassess our technological ties to China.”
