McCaul and Salazar on the Release of Political Prisoners in Nicaragua
Washington, D.C. – House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul (R-TX) and the Subcommittee on the Western Hemisphere Chairwoman Maria Salazar (R-FL) released the following statement on the news that 222 political prisoners in Nicaragua, including a U.S. citizen, have been released and are en route to the United States.
“We welcome the news of the release of political prisoners in Nicaragua. Many of these prisoners were opposition political figures and key members of civil society who worked to combat the socialist Ortega-Murillo regime. For years, they faced brutal and inhumane conditions, including torture. We urge the Biden administration to use the tools authorized in the RENACER Act to hold the Ortega-Murillo regime accountable and support the Nicaraguan people’s efforts for freedom. We also call on our democratic partners and allies to further address this brutal dictatorship by replicating U.S. sanctions and travel restrictions against regime officials.”
