Chairman Salmon on the hearing: “The Republic of Korea and Japan are among the United States’ most pivotal partners, not just in Asia but the world over. Individually, our relationships with both of these Northeast Asian treaty allies are strong and productive, driven by common interests and democratic values. We stand united in the face of rogue nuclear threats, territorial aggression, and a shifting balance of military and diplomatic power. Our shared position could be even stronger if we focus on enhancing these alliances as a comprehensive trilateral relationship. Korea and Japan have endured some lingering historical difficulties, but have recently made important progress. In this hearing, the Subcommittee will investigate policy options to accelerate this progress and further consolidate these invaluable alliances, to better address challenges in Northeast Asia and around the world.”

Chairman Poe on the hearing: “Since the shortsighted U.S.-led military intervention in 2011, Libya has descended into turmoil, providing terrorist groups of all stripes the ideal conditions to exploit. In 2014, ISIS announced its intention to establish a cell in Libya and within two years seized over 200 kilometers of coastal territory and moved nearly 7,000 fighters to what many described as its ‘fallback Caliphate.’ Recent U.S.-backed military efforts have dislodged ISIS from its stronghold in the city of Sirte, but they have by no means delivered the terrorist group a lethal blow. The purpose of this hearing is to explore the causes leading to Libya’s descent into terrorist turmoil and to give Members the opportunity to hear possible solutions for a way forward from experts in the field.”

Chairman Royce on the hearing: “The deteriorating humanitarian crisis in Venezuela and the government’s efforts to undermine its people’s constitutional right to a presidential referendum is deeply concerning. Committee members will have an opportunity to press the administration on its approach to this crisis, as well as discuss what can be done more broadly in Latin America and the Caribbean with our regional partners to promote shared values of peace, prosperity and democracy.”
