Washington, D.C. – House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce (R-CA) released the following statement regarding the decision of Gabon’s Constitutional Court to uphold the country’s presidential election results despite ‘obvious anomalies’ found by international observers:

“For democracy to work, citizens must have confidence in their election process.  Unfortunately that confidence is nonexistent in Gabon at the moment.  Serious doubts exist about the Constitutional Court’s impartiality and thoroughness.  I urge those who reject this decision to promote peace, not violence.  And I call on regional bodies to assist Gabon’s political leaders in finding a path forward that takes into account the will of the Gabonese people they serve.”
