Chairman McCaul Issues Statement on Iran’s Extraterritorial Threats
Washington, D.C. — Today, House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul issued the following statement on the Iranian regime’s extraterritorial threats, including efforts to influence the 2024 presidential election.
“The ODNI’s latest election security update contains troubling information that Iran is working to fuel distrust in U.S. political institutions and increase social discord, including working to influence our presidential election. This comes after the disturbing reports of a possible Iranian plot to assassinate former President Donald Trump.
“The Iranian regime has a long history of brutal transnational repression efforts targeting dissidents, journalists, activists, and former Iranian and U.S. officials for assassination, kidnapping, and hacking. U.S. efforts to punish and deter Iran’s extraterritorial threats have thus far been insufficient. The Iranian regime feels emboldened to attack the United States, American institutions, and people residing here and in Europe. I urge the Biden administration to use all tools at its disposal to make public Iran’s nefarious extraterritorial attacks and malign influence operations, and to devote additional resources to foiling these plots. We must do everything we can to stop Iran and its terrorist and criminal associates from perpetrating attacks and sowing discord in our society.”
