State Department to Testify

Washington, D.C. – Today, U.S. Rep. Ed Royce (R-CA), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, announced that on Thursday, March 6 the Committee will convene a hearing to examine the recent events in Ukraine and the next steps forward for U.S. foreign policy in the region.  The hearing entitled, “U.S. Foreign Policy Toward Ukraine” will begin at 9:30 a.m.

Chairman Royce on the hearing: “The situation in Ukraine continues to change rapidly and unpredictably.  The new government faces enormous challenges, ranging from restoring order to preventing an economic collapse.  There are also separatist forces in Crimea and other regions and the potential for dangerous instability.  This hearing will be an opportunity for Committee members to examine U.S. interests in the region and review the State Department’s plans to support the new government, especially any plans for U.S. financial assistance.”

Note: Last month, the House Foreign Affairs Committee unanimously passed H. Res. 447, authored by Ranking Member Eliot Engel (D-NY), which calls on all sides in the ongoing confrontation in Ukraine to refrain from violence and to work toward a peaceful resolution of the crisis.  On February 10, the House of Representatives passed H. Res. 447.
