Chairman Smith on the hearing: “As part of the peace process, the British government freely committed to a judicial inquiry into government collusion in the murder of Irish human rights lawyer Pat Finucane. Yet it refuses to deliver on the commitment, and so the controversy continues. This hearing will inform Congress on the current status of the collusion case anadvisor to Prime Minister Cameron recently called, ‘the big one.’”

Chairman Royce on the hearing: “Iran’s march towards nuclear weapons continues. A nuclear Tehran is the gravest threat facing the U.S. and our allies. The U.S. must respond with crippling sanctions and a coherent policyaimed at preventing Iran from acquiring a nuclear weapons capability. Only by taking pressure on the regime to the max does this policy have a chance of succeeding.
“Congressional testimony from the Administration regarding Iran is overdue. This hearing will provide an opportunity to examine U.S. policy toward Iran. The hearing will also be a chance to press the Administration on critical questions surrounding U.S. participation in the P5+1 negotiations and its implications for the enforcement of sanctions.”

Chairman Chabot on the hearing: “The Obama Administration’s Fiscal Year 2014 request for the Asia-Pacific region is the largest funding increase requested for any regional account. This substantial increase is part of the Administration’s efforts to not only recognize Asia’s growing importance, but to ensure that the U.S. presence and influence there remains strong. Given the importance of the Asia-Pacific region, the Subcommittee will hold an oversight hearing to assess how assistance programs in this part of the world are meeting U.S. priorities and national security interests, and to determine whether there are proper measures in place that ensure taxpayer funds are being appropriately used. Whenever a large increase in funding is sought, it is critical that Congress be able to measure the effectiveness of such a request. Each dollar provided must be justified and yield a substantial return on the American taxpayer investment.”

Approximately 216 million people are infected with malaria each year, and nearly 660,000 die, mostly children under the age of five in sub-Saharan Africa. At this hearing, the subcommittee will examine how the United States is contributing to the global fight against malaria, and how we can best meet the future challenges posed by this devastating disease.”
