Washington, D.C. – Congressman Michael McCaul (R-TX), Lead Republican on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, made the following statement about U.S. policy regarding Syria:

“The United States should not step aside and allow a Turkish military operation in Northeast Syria. This move will undermine our ongoing campaign to prevent an ISIS resurgence and will ultimately threaten our homeland. Additionally, the United States needs to stay engaged to prevent further destructive involvement in the region from our adversaries like the Assad regime, Putin and Iran.

“The Syrian Democratic Forces and our other local partners have made immense sacrifices to help the United States defeat the physical caliphate, and they continue to support our operations in the region. Our collective focus needs to remain on the counter-ISIS mission. I strongly urge the President to reconsider this decision and for the United States to re-engage with Turkey on a security mechanism in Northeast Syria that does not entail unilateral Turkish military action.”
