Washington, D.C. – House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce (R-CA) issued the following statement in support of the administration’s announcement to impose an arms embargo on South Sudan:

“Years of bloody conflict in South Sudan has created devastating conditions for millions of people. These innocent civilians are desperate for food, clean water and basic medical care. I am glad the United States is acting to help stop the flow of weapons fueling the violence. Now it is time for the U.N. to step up, follow the administration’s action and impose an international arms embargo.”

NOTE: Last year, Chairman Royce signed a bipartisan letter sent to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin urging him to target the financial interests of high-level military and political officials in South Sudan. Chairman Royce first called for an arms embargo on South Sudan in December of 2016.
