Chairman Royce on the hearing: “While the regime in Tehran is expanding and developing its intercontinental ballistic missile capabilities to deliver a nuclear payload, the U.S. and our partners are facing growing Iranian-backed forces throughout the region. Hezbollah is on the march, particularly threatening Israel. This hearing will give members an opportunity to discuss how the United States can work with our allies to develop an effective response to the full range of threats Iran poses.”

Chairman Ros-Lehtinen on the hearing: “It’s been nearly a year since Lebanon broke its political deadlock and elected a president, making this an opportune time to assess U.S. policy toward Beirut under the new administration. Hezbollah and its patron Iran’s influence within the Lebanese government continues to grow, exacerbating longstanding concerns about U.S. cooperation with the Lebanese Armed Forces. The U.S. is also providing aid for a number of programs intended to encourage democracy and economic growth, in addition to assisting with the humanitarian needs of over one million Syrian refugees. This hearing will allow Members to question administration officials about U.S. objectives and programs in Lebanon, how they fit into larger U.S. interests in the region, and determine what changes to U.S. policy need to be made.”

Chairman Smith on the hearing: “There was some real concern when the intention to make deep cuts to foreign aid and foreign operations was originally made known by the Administration. Apparently, Africa was never the main target of such cuts. But what will be the eventual impact of cuts and reorganization that do take place? This hearing is intended to ascertain the impact on U.S. policy and programming in Africa in the FY2018 budget that is being finalized over the next few weeks.”
