Sudan, the delegation discussed factors affecting the implementation of the
Comprehensive Peace Agreement; issues of economic and political development in
Southern Sudan; the international response to the ongoing humanitarian crisis
in neighboring Darfur; and the growing number of refugees from Darfur arriving

widow of the late Dr. John Garang, former leader of the Sudanese People’s
Liberation Movement, who was killed in a tragic helicopter crash just 21 days
after being sworn in as President of Southern Sudan and First Vice President of
the Government of National Unity.

Southern Sudan Legislative Assembly, where the discussion focused on the
progress achieved thus far toward strengthening their nascent institutions,
including the drafting of Southern Sudan’s first-ever constitution.

In a meeting with Maj. General Luke Aprezi,

concerns about the deteriorating security situation in Darfur, including
attacks on refugees and internally displaced persons, and the targeting of AU
forces and aid workers by rebels, some of which are allied with leaders of the
regime in Khartoum (North Sudan).
